There are alot of children in this country going hungry, being neglected and severely abused. A good many of them are in my family. There seems to be a major hush hush about it in certain communities. Some of it can be attributed to matrial piety ( i just made this term up) but I will address that in another and more raw post.
Today I saw and read an article on a father and son video on face book. The father was disciplining his son about respecting his elders. In a boxing match he busted his lip and bloodied his nose. He didn't die or need medical attention. While it is juvenile and short sighted to post the ordeal on face book I cannot deny that a good punch in the face sometimes does the trick.
Is it abuse?
I've seen abuse first hand. Abuse is when someone fulfills their own emotional needs in harming another. Abuse happens out of anger and sometimes mental illness. There are alot of unaddressed issues in many communities that have somehow become culture. This culture can develop into a sick sense of what is and is not acceptable to do to children to get them to understand how to survive and thrive in this world.
Every time I see an article about a parent whipping or disciplining their child and putting it on the internet I wonder who they really are trying to help. The Internet-as everyone says- is forever. And while for the time being your child gets the point, it wouldn't be cool for this footage to pop up when they are trying to make their way in the world.
In other words...Parents please stop giving your children's enemies ammunition. It is one thing to discipline your child in the privacy of your home. It is another thing to publicly shame them in a way that can never be erased.
How would you like it if you child posted pictures of you crying after watching the Superbowl or after your drunk boyfriend beat YOUR ass?
You'd say it was disrespectful. Although some communities don't think children deserve any respect, keep this in mind: that child will grow up one day to be an adult. Do you want this adult to have most of their trauma coming from you? Or do you want them to be able to think about what you told them to get through the traumas in life?
And while I'm on the subject...Where the fuck is child services when a child is being locked into a closet for 5 years? So we are only paying attention to people that are open about how they treat their offspring? GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!
