I saw a commercial last night that really disturbed me.
A young woman has company over her apartment. She took a break from a group discussion to consult an AI reference on what topics to discuss with her peers.
On the surface, it seemed like an innocent use of technology for someone who finds it hard to carry on conversation in a social setting.
...but then I thought it about it. I really thought about it. And the more I thought about it the more disturbed I became.
We have AI writing shorty essays with no references in seconds. AI is automating responses that humans used to give. AI is now on the verge of giving diagnoses in hospitals.
I'm not saying technology isn't a good thing. But it is alarming to think that it will become a social norm to no even have to come up with an original thought or topic for a social gathering.
I come from the last generation that had to actually read paper and hard back books. I worked in a library while I was in college. If you wanted to do a research paper you had to open a book at some point. You had to site your sources.
When you ask most AI programs where the information comes from you get an evasive response.
I remember a book we had to read back in the day called "1984."
In that book all of history had been re-written. It was such a restrictive and oppressive "utopia" that the government controlled all forms of media and documentation of such media and historical texts.
The general public was under surveillance in their own homes by "Big Brother" 24 hours a day.
In our reality, libraries are losing funding and being closed down, books are being banned and edited for "offensive content," and in some universities Wikipedia is considered a primary source.
All I'm saying is that we created AI. AI should be no less accountable than the people who had to site their sources to get their degrees to be qualified to create the programs.
And people please take the time to get to know yourself and expand your knowledge so that you don't have to ask an artificial intelligence program what to say at parties.
